I have been challenged by the BIC and to my surprise, I rose to the challenge. This experience cannot be fully explained without evaluating and reflecting upon the various worlds, lives, and cultures explored in the BIC and how they are personally related to me. When the dwarves ran to get away they didnt know the way because of two reasons, one reason is because it was pitch dark and there were so many tunnels soon after running down different tunnels the goblins soon chased them and caught up to them, and knocked down Dori who was carrying Bilbo, who was knocked down when a goblin tripped him and Bilbo was thrown down a hole and could not meet up with the others because he hit his head on the way down and the others took off without him. In the dark, all alone and not knowing where he was, crawling around on his knees he put his hand on something small, circular and cold and he slipped it into his pocket. Soon after awhile of crawling he fell into water and went fully under the water when he slipped out of the water. When Bilbo was dried off, he noticed a pair of eyes coming to him and was scared so he pulled out his dagger and told the monster to stop where he was and not to move, the monster was curious who he was and what he is doing in his tunnel. The monsters name was Gollum who was alive for many years. He would catch lost goblins and ones that strayed away from the group. Bilbo was very scared of the monster because he did not know what kind of creature it was or if it was hungry for Bilbo, so he asked the monster if he wanted to play a game with him. The game was to ask each other riddles and if Bilbo stumped Gollum he would have to show him the way out, but if Bilbo lost, Gollum could do any thing he wanted to him. Bilbo won of course but it was long and hard. So Gollum the loser, was very mad and decided to kill him anyway and do it very quick. So he said he had to go back to his island and look for something that would help him find the way when it would turn Gollum invisible and be able to kill Bilbo, but he could not find it because he dropped it in the tunnels catching a lost goblin and killing him. Gollum was furious and Bilbo was getting impatient waiting for him. The last riddle of Bilbos was what was in his pocket, which was Gollums present, the ring, and when Gollum had discovered it he began rowing as fast as he can towards Bilbo, to get his ring back. Bilbo slipped on the ring and was invisible but tripped over a loose root and Gollum ran right past him and Bilbo got up and followed him to the secret exit and found out that Bilbo didnt know the way so he sat down and waited for bilbo to show up when he was right behind him the whole time. So Bilbo had to escape, he ran back some and he jumped higher than any hobbit had ever jumped and cleared Gollums head by an inch and ran through the door and past the goblins. After he ran past the goblins there was one more tunnel he had to go through and he could see the light from the door but it was guarded with many goblins. He slipped in between their legs and their feet and tried to get out the look out window but he got stuck and with one hard push he was out but he lost his buttons and his belt ripped. The goblins where puzzled how the buttons had shown up and soon looked out the look out window and saw Bilbos shadow and so they chased him until he hid in the shadows of the trees. He ran for a good bit until he saw Bifur on look- out duty. When Bilbo was past him he took off his ring and they were all amazed how he had gotten out of the tunnels alive and he told the story (without including the ring) and they were all amazed and admired h im. After they woke up, they started on their way and Gandalf was leading them to an old friend of his. When they got to his land he told them that he was a skin changer and lived in a place with a lot of animals and rare plants. Gandalf told them to come two by two every five minutes or so and Bilbo was to come with Gandalf. When they found him he invited them and they told the story of what has happened so far and slowly the dwarves started to come in his house. After supper they all went to bed in a comfortable bed and dreamthorrible dreams about the goblins getting them in their sleep and all of them woke up in sweat. When Beorn came home from a walk he went to see if their story was true, it was so he lent them ponies and supplies and sent them on the way to Mirkwood , where he told them of the dangers and to stay on the path. When they got to the entrance of Mirkwood they had to send their ponies back and Gandalf did not follow them through Mirkwood he went back with the ponie s to Beorn. They camped that night at the entrance and when they woke up they would go in and follow the path and they did just that until they got to the first thing Beorn warned them about, the Black River, that if you drank from, touched or fell in you would forget all that you remembered or knew. They saw a boat up stream and threw a rope and got it as they brought it over they crossed the river two by two with Bombur going last because he was the fattest and when he was about to get up on the land a deer jumped out from a bush and kicked him into the river and as the dwarves shot at it, it was to late, the deer had already been far away and they had wasted arrows on it and Bombur was saved and brought up on land and was in a deep sleep and so they carried him from there until he would wake. Their rations where low and they where very hungry and tired when Bombur woke up from the long sleep and was hungry and they wished he would shut up and stop talking about the feast he had i n his dreams with the elf king. That night they took camp and Bilbo was to take guard, so he did. But slowly drifted to sleep and when he woke up he was alone and was trapped by a spiders web it was around his feet and he pulled out his knife and slashed the spider across his eyes and escaped to look for his friends when all the sudden he could hear spiders talking about the dwarves and how they where easy to capture except for one, and it was Thorin, who had killed a spider, but when he took count he saw that one was missing so he slipped on his ring and tricked the spiders by teasing them and calling them names. And so they chased after the voice and he left them in the woods and cut the dwarves down as easy as possible and let them free from the webs. After they got up Bilbo had told them about the ring and they didnt think less of him, they thought more of him, that he was a better burglar with it and after the story the dwarves where captured by elves, but Bilbo still had the r ing on so he didnt get caught and he could see where they where taking the dwarves. When the dwarves were sent to prison by the elf king they were fed. Bilbo was exploring the palace and he found out that Thorin had been captured as well. He had fully explored the palace and had memorized the passageways. When he heard of a great party coming up he thought of ways to get the dwarves out. He heard about a back door where empty barrels were dropped and it was a perfect chance so he got ready and made sure nothing would go wrong. When the party came, the elves who carried the keys had some special wine and it knocked them out and it was a sign for his plan to go in action, so he did and got all the dwarves even Thorin who was on the other side of the palace and then got them to the trap door and locked them in empty barrels and the door opened and the barrels were dropped into the water, but some hit the walls and edges and Bilbo jumped down and followed them in the cold water on a bar rel that kept on turning over. Right before they got to the Lake Town, where the barrels were suppose to go he gathered them up and checked them for the dwarves and found that most of them were bruised up and cut, others were cramped and stuffy and others were fine. When they went out to explore the area they saw village guards and out of nowhere Thorin popped out and said, I am Thorin Okensheild son of the king under the hill and I wish to speak with the king of this town. And the guards took him to the table where the king had been at a feast with some of the elf men. When the king gave them shelter and healed them and they regained their strength because their journey was about to come to an end, for they were going to go up the hill and find Smuag the dragon who killed the dwarves village and their king. And they were going to get back what was theirs the gold of the mountain. When they where fully healed the where escorted by the kings men until they got to the end of the river where the mountain started. When they got started up the mountain, they took camp because they wanted an early start on Smaug. As they slowly climbed the mountain they searched for the secret path that was on Thorins map and it was Bilbos job to find the way in. When they found the door they could not find the way to get it open so they sent Bilbo there and made him sit there until he found a way to get it open, but until then they searched for another way into the mountain. When they took camp on their seventh night on the mountain Bilbo saw a rock sticking out of a grassy area the moonlight shined on the rock and soon the wall behind him started to shake and crumble when Bilbo made a large scream for Thorin to put his key, which he held around his neck. When Thorin put the key in, the door swung up and it reeked and it was dark. They sent Bilbo in and he was very scared and didnt want to go alone but he did anyway, so as he slowly moved down the long tunnel he finally reached the other side where he saw a bright red and golden glow. There lay Smuag, with his wings under him and his tail curled around him and his long head on top of his tail. Bilbo slowly entered the room and took a large cup filled with wine that was still good and he brought it back to the dwarves and they drank that night and slept well. When they woke it was not pleasant and it had sounded like the mountain was going to explode. When Smuag flew high out of the mountain in a rage and saw the ponies and the old camps of the dwarves. The ponies fled with fear but most were caught and eaten. When the dragon returned and went back down to his chamber to wait for the thief to return and try to steal again but Bilbo was not that dumb, so he went to the entrance of the chamber and the dragon knew he was there, although he couldnt see him. His keen sense of smell had picked his scent up. The dragon knew he was traveling with the dwarves because he never forgot their taste but there was a new tast e with the dwarves and he couldnt find out what it was. Bilbo was at the doorway not daring to try and steal again but trying to see if the dragon was asleep. But when he looked in the far edge of the dragons left eye he could see the flame and the glare peeping out, looking for the thief, But he could not see him so he spoke out and said I know you are there, although I can not see you I know you are here so why dont you help yourself to more treasure thief. And with a scared reply he answered no thank you and soon they started to talk. And the dragon insisting on knowing who Bilbo was would constantly ask but Bilbo would answer in a smart remark, I am the barrel rider from the East who sneaks into your cave to catch you off guard to steal your marvelous treasure. And the dragon now knowing where he came from, because of his little hint barrel rider he now knows his next area to attack Lake Town. After that little hint, Bilbo started to get cocky. The dragon rose to the tunnel and with a snort he shot flames as hot as lava down the tunnel. The flames burned the hair on Bilbo from his head to his toes. Now, Bilbo going back to the dwarves, with the burns told them to close the door. For the dragon will destroy the whole side just to find them, so they closed the door, and just at that moment the dragon started his rage on the mountain. Luckily the adoption of Tasers – by industry standards as electronic controlled device (ECD) or Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) – allows the law enforcement to apprehend a suspect without having to involve themselves in a close-range combative battle.Charlie Mesloh, a university professor at Florida Gulf Coast, Mark Henych, a researcher at Advanced Research Solutions, and Ross Wolf, a criminal justice professor at the University of Central Florida claim that the Tasers is a less-lethal weapon that inflicts a current of electricity throughout the body of the individual which temporar ily causes the loss of muscle control (25). TASER International, the inventors of ECD claims this as Neuromuscular Incapacitation (NMI) (1).TASER International asserts, â€Å"[t]he human nervous system communicates with simple electrical impulses . . . TASER technology uses similar electrical impulses to cause stimulation of the sensory and motor nerves† (1). Though there are many controversies on the use of Tasers in BC, it is still a much needed device to keep the community safe. Tasers has been shunned upon by many people in British Columbia because of the story’s circulating around and all the news reports on this tiny device.The most famous and memorable story would be the incident that happened at the Vancouver International Airport to Robert Dziekanski. CBC news reports that the video is in three segments, the first segment shows Dziekanski before police arrives being very agitated and yelling in Polish and seems to be very nervous, the second segment shows Dzie kanski picking up a computer then throwing it to the ground, then â€Å"[t]hree airport personnel arrive and block the exit from the secure area, but Dziekanski retreats inside and does not threaten them† (#).The third and final segment shows four RCMP officers arriving on scene and â€Å"can be heard mentioning the word Tasers† (#). Someone can also be heard responding â€Å"Yes† to the question (#). Police have said repeatedly that there were only three RCMP officers involved in the incident, but the video shows four men in RCMP uniforms. People in the lounge can be heard clearly telling the police Dziekanski speaks no English, only Russian. His mother later said he only spoke Polish. Police enter the secure area with no problems and an be seen with Dziekanski standing calmly talking with officers. They appear to direct him to stand against a wall, which he does. As he is standing there, one of the officers shoots him with a Taser . . . officers have also said police did not use pepper spray because of the large number of people at the airport at the time. But the video shows Dziekanski standing alone with the four officers in an otherwise empty area, which is separated from the public area by a thick glass wall. (CBC #)After the Taser shots, the sound from Dziekanski stopped and became silent, an officer can be heard saying, â€Å"code red† after checking on his condition and â€Å"minutes later, ambulance attendants arrived but their efforts to revive Dziekanski were unsuccessful and he was declared dead† (#). There are also other incidents that has happened in the past few years and there are definitely cases of misuse with this device which brings about the misconception people get from Tasers, but even though some tragic events happen, it is still one of the safest alternative to bring a healthy environment to everyone.There are people who strongly believe Tasers should be banned, however, banning Tasers will only resu lt in more injuries during arrests. David Hambling, a respected free lance writer on technology and military states, â€Å"[a] recent study in the American Journal of Public Health looked at 24, 000 cases in which police officers had used force, including Tasers, pepper spray, batons and manual methods . . . the study found that Taser use reduced the overall risk of injury by 65 percent.In other words, restricting Taser use could triple the number of injuries caused in this sort of incident† (1). Misconceptions on the use of Taser led to a comment by a person who goes by the name â€Å"the disturber† on CBC news website, he says, â€Å"what's wrong with people when they [start] using devices that can pump out over 1500 volts for self defence that's just not cool. [D]oesn't any one remember the guy who got [tasered] 5 times at the air port because he wasn't â€Å"co-operating† with the security; wasn't he killed because of the shock? I] think that they should be banned from use for a less [lethal] item like pepper spray† (#). Pepper sprays can not be used in closed areas because it will effect innocent bystanders, also, as Jim Wilkinson, the Vice President of the site Your Greatest Protection declares, â€Å"[pepper spray] works longer than Tasers or stun guns, it will cause coughing and choking, and it burns really bad . . . [s]tun guns work by disabling the nervous and the muscular system but only for a few moments. Pepper spray works by causing pain, blindness, and choking for up to 30 minutes† (1).Tasers only neutralize the suspect for several seconds which allows police to seize the suspect in that time and wouldn't cause the suspect to suffocate for â€Å"30 minutes. † Additionally, there are also many cases where the misuse of pepper spray also caused deaths. Just one mistake with the Taser will bring many people to disagree with the product, but if Taser were really banned, the law enforcement will be forced to use close-range strategies or guns just like in the video Back From The Brink, where Suisun City had to use 52% of the police budget to try and handle the problems in the crime-ridden crescent (video).Any sort of weapons can result in injuries if not used properly, Tasers included, but if used effectively, it will be the best weapon out there to safely neutralize a suspect and bringing a safe community. The incidents revolving around Tasers has angered the general public and as a result, the RCMP invoked strict new rules and training effective May of 2010. The Tasers operational manual provided by the RCMP states, â€Å"[m]embers certified to use the CEW must re-certify annually . . . m]embers whose CEW certification has lapsed must not use the CEW operationally until the re-certification training has been completed† (1). Every part of the Taser is also approved by the RCMP before being released in public. RCMP members must verbally let the subject know the CEW is about to be deployed (3). Additionally, whenever a member takes a CEW it must be thoroughly checked for damages, if no damages are found, a spark test will be conducted, if damages were found, it will be removed with haste and sent to qualified personnel’s (4).Any time the CEW is used it will be recorded down and supervisors will be notified (4). Many strict rules were set in motion to ensure the safety of the user and the subject as well as strict training methods to make the misuse of this product nonexistent. The operational manual also educates that â€Å"[m]ultiple deployment or continuous cycling of the CEW may be hazardous to a subject. Unless situational factors dictate otherwise, members must not cycle the CEW for more than 5 seconds on a subject and will avoid multiple deployments† (3).These new rules and regulations allow for members to thoroughly know the Tasers and assures the correct methods of use is performed. Tasers has been a very controversial device throughout Canada, especially when RCMP officers handle them. The major issue surrounding Tasers is that the citizens feel Tasers is a form of torture while others feel it is a necessary device to keep the community safe.Tasers could be lethal if used the wrong way, but even then Tasers will still be much safer compared to a gun as well as more incapacitating than the pepper spray, also would not cause suffocation to the suspect at hand. If Tasers were taken away, it will only result in more injuries given to the suspect or the officer. When an officer uses the Taser, they must show that their actions were reasonable and just, but good training, as always, is the key to effective use of Taser and to keep our neighborhood friendly. I chose this film because of its sensitive subject on Racism and Discrimination. Rosewood is the true story of a small Florida town, was inhabited that almost entirely by quiet, â€Å"middle-class† African- Americans (most of them home and land owners and better off than average at the time. ) On New Year's Day, 1923, the town was wiped off the face of the earth by angry whites from a neighboring community.It occurred because of the false testimony of one white woman. The massacre in Rosewood claimed dozens of African American's lives. At a time when racial tension was incredibly high, the black members of a small segregated community found themselves unprotected from the hatred of the neighboring white men. The director of this movie is John Singleton; he was on born January 6, 1968, he is a film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is a native of South Los Angeles. A lot of Singletons films deal with issues ranging from discrimination, racism, prejudice, and stereotyping.I will look to explore the different areas of conflict regarding the maltreatment of the African American people. I think that it was so unfortunate for them to be driven away from their homes and life as they knew it. Some of the areas that this film deals with are: Prejudice, Racism, and Discrimination. The conflict theoretical perspective of Weber is utilized throughout the film. The whites were in control of everything, except for the land that the blacks owned (but they wanted to own it too).Prejudice is found throughout this film among the Anglo-Saxon community because of what one woman claimed happened to her. Prejudice is defined as the tendency to think and feel negatively about members of other groups. The main factor of Prejudice as seen it this movie reflects the same ideas that were learned in class. Stereotyping is also present, just because s he (Taylor) didn’t want to be found out she blamed a black man for assaulting and raping her. The fact that the sheriff didn’t really believe her account of what happened, he had to go along with the majority in order to save his ob. This was a case of selective perception, because they only seen it one way, the black man did it. Discrimination on the other hand is the unequal treatment of people based on their membership in a group. Because of what Fannie Taylor said happened to her a whole community suffered at the hands of a group of racist white people. On the morning of January 1, 1923 Fannie Coleman Taylor of Sumner Florida, claimed she was assaulted by a black man. No one disputed her account and no questions were asked.It was assumed she was reporting the incident accurately. Sarah Carrier a black woman from Rosewood, who did the laundry for Fannie Taylor and was present on the morning of the incident, claimed the man that assaulted Fannie Taylor was her white lover. It was believed the two lovers quarreled and he abused Fannie and left. No one questioned Fannie Taylor's account and no one asked Sarah Carrier about the incident. The black community claimed Fannie Taylor was only protecting herself from scandal.Fannie’s husband learned of the incident and became angry. The local white community became aroused at the alleged abuse of a white woman by a black man, which was an unpardonable sin against black men back then to look at a white woman. James Taylor summoned help from Levy County and neighboring Alachua County, who was ending a staged Klu Klux Klan rally leading up to January 1, 1923, on the court house square in downtown Gainesville, where a large number of KKK members had been rallying and marching in opposition of justice for black people.The accounts of what happened: 12/31/22: On New Year's Eve a large Ku Klux Klan Parade is held in Gainesville. 01/01/23: Early morning: Fannie Taylor reports an attack by an unidentified black man. Monday afternoon: Aaron Carrier is apprehended by a posse and is spirited out of the area by Sheriff Walker. Late afternoon: A posse of white vigilantes apprehends and kills a black man named Sam Carter. 01/02/23: Armed whites begin gathering in Sumner. 01/04/23: Late evening: White vigilantes attack the Carrier house. Two white men are killed, and several others wounded.A black woman, Sarah Carrier is killed and others inside the Carrier house are either killed or wounded. Rosewood's black residents flee into the swamps. One black church is burned, and several unprotected homes. 01/05/23: Approximately 200-300 white men from surrounding areas begin to converge on Rosewood. The negro section is destroyed by fire. Governor Cary Hardee is notified, and Sheriff Walker reports that he fears â€Å"no further disorder. † The Sheriff of Alachua County arrives in Rosewood to assist Sheriff Walker. James Carrier is murdered. 1/06/23: A train evacuates refugees, the Rosewoo d families, to Archer and Gainesville. 01/07/23: A mob of 100-150 whites return to Rosewood and burn the remaining structures. For over 60 years, the former citizens of Rosewood lived quietly with their grief and fear. Julian the Apostate and Fall of Paganism When the Roman Emperor Julian (Flavius Claudius Julianus) came to power, Christianity was less popular than polytheism, but when Julian, a pagan (in contemporary usage) known as the Apostate, was killed in battle, it was the end of Roman official acceptance of polytheism. Although paganism was popular, Julians practice was more ascetic than normal pagan practices, which may be why paganism failed when the Apostate reinstated it. From  Gore Vidals  Julian: Julian has always been something of an underground hero in Europe. His attempt to stop Christianity and revive Hellenism exerts still a romantic appeal. When the Roman emperor Julian the Apostate, died in Persia, his supporters failed to maintain support for paganism as the official state religion. It wasnt called paganism at the time, but was known as Hellenism and is sometimes referred to Hellenistic paganism. Instead of the ancient religion returning to the Roman Empire, the popular Emperor Constantines Christianity re-emerged as the dominant one. This seems odd since Christianity wasnt as popular among the people as Hellenism, so scholars have searched Julians life and administration for clues to why the apostasy (which means the standing away from [Christianity]) failed. Julian (born A.D. 332), the nephew of the first Christian emperor, Constantine, was trained as a Christian, yet he is known as an apostate because when he became emperor (A.D. 360) he opposed Christianity. In The Demise of Paganism, James J. ODonnell suggests that the emperors particularly vehement stance against Christianity (and support for the other monotheistic religion, Judaism) stems from his Christian upbringing. Julians Intolerance Although any such generalization is hazardous, pagans of the time generally held religion to be a private matter, while Christians behaved strangely in trying to convert others to their faith. They claimed that Salvation made possible through Jesus was the only true belief. In the wake of the Nicene Council, Christian leaders condemned all who failed to believe in the prescribed manner. To be a pagan in the old tradition, Julian should have let everyone worship as he or she wished. Instead of letting each person worship in his own way, Julian stripped the Christians of their privileges, powers, and rights. And he did so from their own perspective: the intolerant attitude that ones private religion is of public concern. From The Demise of Paganism: In summary, it is necessary to look upon the religious sociology of the fourth century with two separate (if often, and confusingly, overlapping) distinctions in mind: that between worshippers of Christ and worshippers of other gods; and that between men who could accept a plurality of worships and those who insisted on the validity of a single form of religious experience to the exclusion of all others. Julians Elitism Other writers say the failure of Julian to reintegrate Hellenistic paganism into the framework of Roman society came from his inability to make it popular and his insistence that true understanding is impossible to the average mortal, but is reserved for philosophers. Another important factor was that the Christian creeds were far more unified than paganism. Paganism wasnt a single religion and adherents to different gods did not necessarily support each other.   The panoply of religious experience in the Roman world before Constantine was simply bewildering: from back-yard fertility rites through public, state-supported cults to the mystical ascents of which Platonic philosophers wrote with such devotion- and everything between, over, under, and all around such phenomena. There were public cults indigenous to the various parts of the empire, certain generally (if often lukewarmly) accepted devotions such as that to the divinity of the emperors, and a vast array of private enthusiasms. That such a spectrum of religious experiences should produce a single-minded population capable of forming itself into a single pagan movement with which Christianity could struggle is simply not probable. Lack of a Powerful Pagan Successor to Julian In 363, when Julian died, he was succeeded by Jovian, a Christian, at least nominally, instead of the obvious choice, Julians praetorian prefect, the moderate polytheist, Saturninius Secundus Salutius. Secundus Salutius didnt want the job even though it meant continuing Julians mission. Paganism was diverse and tolerant of this diversity. Secundus Salutius didnt share the late emperors parochial attitudes or specific beliefs. No other pagan emperor came to power before the Roman state outlawed pagan practices. Even so 1,700 years later, we continue to be predominantly a Christian society in terms of our beliefs, it may have been the pagan attitude of religious tolerance that prevailed.
